Infinite Abundance

"Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!"

(Romans 11:33)

"For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?" "Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?" For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.

(Romans 11:34-36)

Man was created to receive the infinite abundance of God. The world was created good, and good for receiving God's blessing to man. God created man to receive His goodness and His blessing, but man rebelled. And God cursed the ground because of man. God was taking His abundant provision away from sinful, rebellious man. "Cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return" (Genesis 3:17-19). Yes, man would still eat of the ground. But he would struggle to do so. By great toil and the sweat of his brow, he would bring forth bread. But things have changed.

Adam was exiled from the Garden of Eden after he sinned. But over time, man went right back into another garden — a garden in Egypt, the garden of Goshen, where the plants of the field would bring forth abundantly. Man was eating bread and plants before kings and rulers. God was doing something new. The patterns and shadows of the OT begin to point us to what God is doing. God is undoing the curse of Genesis 3, and the fruit of the ground brought forth abundantly and infinitely more. And so it was, in Egypt, that Joseph said to Pharaoh, "I let Pharaoh know that God will bring an abundance," meaning that God himself will bring abundance into Egypt and overflowing. The abundance of God is not dependent upon the people; it is dependent upon the finished work of God in Jesus Christ. And when God brings a harvest, He brings enough for everyone. And when God brings an abundance, it is God's total abundance. Every good and perfect gift comes from Him. It is by His blessing that these things come. "A land that the Lord your God cares for. The eyes of the Lord your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year" (Deut. 11:12). It is because of Christ that abundance comes. It is because God is who He is. It is because of the essence of who God is that He gives abundantly. It is God's total abundance.

And throughout Scripture, and throughout history, the curse comes undone, and from great toil by the sweat of his brow, he brings forth bread. But now, in Christ, the ground is now bringing forth infinitely more. God is bringing in and ushering in the days of infinite abundance.
